The death of a young woman who killed herself after being found “fit for work” is the latest proof of the catastrophic consequences of the government’s cuts to disability benefits and services, say campaigners.
The mother of the young woman – from London – also killed herself, just 24 hours after hearing of her daughter’s death earlier this month.
Paula, a disabled activist from south London and a friend of the young woman, took part in a protest and lobby of parliament this week that had been organised by the grassroots campaign group Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC).

I dont know much about the afterlife, but think I will be haunting a lot of MP’s !
A LIBDEM MP on the death of another activist was alledged to have said “Things are worse in Burma”. That may be so but to this poor young woman and here mother this was about as bad as things could get.
I dont want to get you our your site in trouble. Be we all know who are either killing people via harassment or better still get them to kill themselves.
How many more people have to die?
Those to blame have blood on their hands. Blood of helpless individuals. People not numbers, mothers and daughters not claimants.
This is getting to be a weekly if not daily occurance and yet most of the press report only on fraudsters and scroungers.
I’d love to know who that LibDem idiot is, maybe you could send me a message through the contact form If you’d rather not mention it yourself…?
Does this Lib Dem fool use Burma as a default for what is and is not acceptable for UK policy then?? What an arse. I too would like to know who s/he is, because this statement is incomprehensible, insulting and callous.
but will they listen you bet they wont two more and calum list just gets bigger whot a bloody disgracefull lot of super rich mps who leave this happen to the people who need help not a finger pointed at them saying scroungers and get a job ,perhaps they could open their eyes and see the suffering they causing but no it will go on and more will die jeff3
My wonderful Gp described the situation like this: first you claim for what you are entitled to, to DWP and have an ATOS assessment. Their remit is to find as few people as possible to be entitled and to spend as little money as possible. Then you come to us (medical profession). our remit is to help you to get what you are entitled to. In short you apply, they say no, then you fight, we help you and you get the benefit. You have to fight them.
I’m lucky to have such a wonderful GP. I suspect others aren’t. To put disabled and sick people through such a cruel charade is inhuman. The fact that is is costing the lives of British people should put an immediate end to this callous money, target-led system. How the Lib-Dem MP could make such an offhand brutal remark indicates the way the attitudes of those in power are hardening further. There should be a national outcry but I fear this and all the other tragedies, all the human despair will be brushed under the carpet. I would love to be able to put cardboard cut-out coffins, one for every death, in Downing St.
Another sad outcome to this Government-funded ATOS farce. We must take some sort of solace in this tragedy and others like it, that no matter how many times Iain Duncan Smith washes his hands, he will never get rid of the blood. He is obviously devoid of any form of compassion.
Are there any more details of this tragedy? Can’t find the source.

Hi John
The only place I have found is – http://www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/benefits-news/story/671
The deaths are mounting up John, when will the organisations such as the GMC BMA and the politicians start to see what’s really going on?
I feel such anger towards this bloody coalition plus the bloody Labour politicians for standing bye and doing nothing about it, they have no bloody shame the lot of em…. Hope your well mate…
The LibDem fool was Jo Swinson.
Do you know where and when this idiot said this? If you can post the info I’d be very pleased?…
I am afraid what is being said here is incorrect, Jo Swinson did not say those words, however another tweeter Kilburn Mat did, he jumped in on her feed, and said himself the very words he then accused her of saying, and it quickly spiralled into a attack.
The dialogue went like this. I was sent two screen captures by a distressed MH patient who watched it all unfold, which I have transcribed here.
Jo Swinson wrote
Politics is not above us or beneath us, it is an integral part of our everyday lives – Aung San Suu Kyi
Kilburn Mat wrote
Yep @joswinson and your government is destroying lives everyday
Jo Swinson wrote
@matofkilburnia not really fitting in with the mood there Mat…Burmese people sadly know more about destroyed lives than most
Kilburn Mat wrote
@joswinson fitting mood outside of Westminster very much so. Tell someone faced with disability losing their home the Burmese have it worse.
Jo Swinson wrote
@matofkilburnia words fail me. I can only suggest you read up on the atrocities that have been happening for years in Burma
Kilburn Mat wrote
Don’t be suicidal after being kicked off disability benefit after humiliation by ATOS, as @joswinson points out, they have it worse in Burma
Twitter June 21st 2012.
Thanks for putting that up Ian, it’s always important that FACTS get reported, thanks again for that.
Mind you, trying to compare the problems the people of Burma have with the problems and humiliation the disabled people of the UK are having to endure is not really a valid point?
I just wanted to find out who said it originally and now you’ve put us straight…
4 months down the line & I’ve only just heard of this. I’ve about the problems with journalists, I’ve heard all about the X-Factor finalists, I’ve heard all about the queen of the jungle, but I haven’t heard about this tragedy. “The wool that pulled over our eyes”, these people have been pushed to the edge by those “people”, though I despise having to refer to them as if they were human, who have pushed the poor souls I keep hearing about to the edge. There is a great wrong being done to people who can’t fight back, one day, I pray, they try & wrong someone who has the means to fight back. Unless those who are in power develop a conscience & change what’s happening, though I won’t hold my breath.
