A new bogus SMS from Royal Mail sent by phishing scammers

Phishing scammers have started sending a new wave of fake Royal Mail text messages.

Previously, people had been warned to watch out for text messages in which criminals pretending to be the Royal Mail claim that a package was awaiting delivery, but a ‘settlement’ must first be paid.

Now we got a screenshot of a new text message doing the trick. This targets people who may have sent packages by post.

It reads: “Royal Mail: Please pay your shipping costs immediately … or your package will be returned to sender.”

Both texts include links to a scam website that requests personal and payment information.

The theft of personal and financial information is known as phishing – and the information can be used by crooks to commit other frauds, potentially costing victims dearly.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has previously said that the increase in online shopping means more people are likely to wait for packages and deliveries, making them more vulnerable to this type of scam.

Senior Officer Katherine Hart said: “This delivery scam is another example of scammers trying to make money from an unsuspecting public. Due to lockdowns, millions of people depend on product delivery, so scammers have focused their efforts on this topic.

“Royal Mail will only contact you by text or email if customs charges are due, and not for domestic parcel delivery. If you have any suspicions, contact Royal Mail to verify before clicking on any links or sharing details.

“In addition, the public should also be aware that these types of scams can take many forms and that scammers don’t just use the Royal Mail brand.

“Indeed, in January, I commented on a similar scam using DPD branding.

“These types of scams come in many forms, not just texting, but email and phone as well.”
