A new report has revealed how fraud attempts against Nottinghamshire County Council worth £ 4million have been detected and stopped over the past five years.

The figure was published in the county council’s annual fraud report, which also describes how a wide range of council teams have worked to stop 534 fraud attempts since 2016.

The most important case took place in 2019/2020 when an unsuccessful attempt was made to steal £ 2.2million using fake bank details for a major County Council provider.

In the last financial year 2020/2021, County Council prevented the theft of £ 370,000 by eliminating 61 cases of attempted fraud.

County Council Governance and Ethics Committee Chairman Councilor Philip Owen said: “I am delighted that the hard work and diligence of council staff has helped stop hundreds of potential frauds worth money. million dollars over the past five years.

“Our advice, of course, works with taxpayer dollars, which makes it even more vital to stop these scammers before they can do damage with their underhanded methods.

“The County Council takes a zero tolerance approach to attempted fraud, and we will use the full force of the law against fraudsters, not hesitating to prosecute. “

The effectiveness of Nottinghamshire County Council in tackling fraud comes as crime continues to threaten the public sector and increases across the country in general.

The annual fraud indicator produced by Crowe UK estimated in 2017 that the threat of fraud to local government could reach £ 7.8 billion.

The government’s economic crime plan said the number of fraud offenses rose 12% in 2018 to 3.6 million, representing a third of all crimes in the UK.

Councilor Owen added: “Despite the County Council’s success over the past five years, we cannot rest on our laurels – fraud attempts occur every day in all parts of the UK.

“Unscrupulous fraudsters will unfortunately always be a risk, but our excellent specialist staff are ready and waiting to stop any attempt to steal taxpayer money from County Council.”

Common fraud attempts in the public sector include changes to bank details and bogus payment requests, deprivation of assets and the misuse of direct payments.

2017/2018 – £ 227,294 – 151 cases

2018/2019 – £ 238,509 – 82 cases

2019/2020 – £ 2,673,069 – 78 cases

2020/2021 – £ 369,793 – 61 cases
