Gardaí repeats advice on how to avoid getting ripped off as Ireland is confirmed as second worst affected country in Europe
Ireland is the second most scammed country in Europe with a value of nearly € 8,000 defrauded per 1,000 inhabitants, according to a new study.
more than 260,000 credit and debit card frauds, worth a total of € 22 million, hit the Irish last year, and gardaí said online transaction fraud increased by 50% in 2020 compared to 2019.
Only the UK has a higher level of impact of financial fraud by criminals involved in investment scams, redirect scams, identity theft fraud and other activities where organized gangs use telephone and Internet systems to access people’s bank accounts.
The other countries in the top 10 most defrauded in Europe are Denmark, France, Luxembourg, Malta, Sweden, Finland, Belgium and the Netherlands.
The research was carried out by Uswitch.com, a UK-based comparison and switching service, using data collected from the European Central Bank and the UK Finance Fraud Report 2021.
The scam is now so widespread as a growing and lucrative modern criminal phenomenon that Gardaí last week reiterated its advice to the public on how to avoid being defrauded.
On Wednesday, they said that despite increased publicity around the activities of scammers, people continue to fall victim to scams on a daily basis.
“In recent days, Garda has received reports nationwide, including reports from Donegal, Monaghan, Dublin and Kilkenny counties regarding automated fraudulent phone calls,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“The recipient is called and informed via a recorded message that An Garda Síochána is investigating him for suspicious activity related to his PPS number.
“In order to rectify the situation, the recipient is then advised to press a number to speak more to someone about the matter. These fraudulent calls mainly come from numbers with the 087 prefix ”, he added.
This scam mimics a recent one where members of the public were receiving calls from 083 numbers.
Garda’s advice is not to communicate with the caller, return the call, follow automated instructions, press 1, etc., never disclose personal or financial information. , hang up and block the number if possible.
